Your View: Better alternatives

NEOSHO, Mo. — Concerning this bill arming teachers and school administrators: This bill creates so many variables and possible scenarios that I believe that there are better alternatives.

Personally, I believe that we should use the Constitution to protect our schools and our children. I know that this sounds unthinkable to many, but we could use our military and our National Guard in tandem with the county and local police to protect the schools. We have Guard members in foreign countries building roads and bridges, and we need them at home to protect us from domestic threats. Our military is supposed to provide us with domestic protection, too.

How can you prepare a teacher to take that responsibility? How can a teacher in a classroom stop a murderer at the door? What if the murderer gets into the building and locks themselves in a classroom filled with children and that teacher is unprepared to confront the attacker? What if a teacher does not want to carry a gun? What if only a certain number of people in that school are armed and the classroom under attack has a teacher who is not armed? Like I said, there are so many variables and possibilities and the responsibility of carrying and discharging a firearm is not the role of an educator.

My solution utilizes people who are already trained by experts. They are already being paid to protect us and they can patrol the school perimeter and guard the doors. I say use the resources we already have and use them in tandem with the police. If there are educators who are ex-military or have extensive training dealing with this type of situation, then arming them is acceptable.
