Our View: More than a meal

JOPLIN, Mo. — When you are elderly, live alone and the weather is bad, the daily knock on the door is as reassuring as the meal that’s being delivered.

The volunteers who deliver meals from local senior centers to homebound seniors deserve much praise. Their labor of love allows many seniors to stay in their own homes. It also provides peace of mind for family members.

But sometimes there are too few volunteers and far more need. The Area Agency on Aging needs your help now.

You can make a real difference in your community by signing up to deliver meals. Bring along a few co-workers and designate one day a month to make deliveries. Challenge other departments to do the same.

Can’t do that? Then buy a meal coupon book or two to make sure the meals keep coming.

The suggested donation for a coupon book (10 meal coupons) is $30. You can stop by any senior center or purchase one at the Area Agency on Aging’s central office at 531 E. 15th St. in Joplin. The meal coupons can be used at any of the centers.

Want to really put a smile on the face of an elderly neighbor? Offer to take them to a local senior center where they not only will get a good lunch but have the opportunity to participate in activities and meet friends. And, while you’re at it, stay and have lunch.

So often we go in search of a cause or a mission, only to overlook the obvious.

A $3 meal may not seem like much to you. But for some who live quietly among us, it’s a necessity.

Even though the Second Amendment to the U.S. Constitution guarantees “the right of the people to keep and bear arms,” Missouri voters on Aug. 5 are being asked to consider an amendment that restates that freedom and then goes even further.
