Voices: Signing dog’s death warrant

PITTSBURG, Kan. — On Wednesday evening while driving on Joplin’s North Main Street, I hit and killed a beautiful bloodhound dog.

This dog, whether lost or dumped by his owner at the nearby Humane Society, was in the turn lane with heavy traffic on both sides of it.

It appeared suddenly in my lane, giving me no time to try and take action to avoid him. My heart breaks because I did hit and kill him. If your dog escaped your yard and was lost, I am sorry for your loss. If you dumped him, thinking the Humane Society would find a good home for him, shame on you — you signed his death warrant one way or another.

If you read the newspaper, you would know the Humane Society has been deluged with animals being brought in since the shelter was built. Do all of you people who are dumping your animals near the shelter think all the animals left there are either adopted or just live there for the remainder of their natural life?
