GALENA, Kan. —
The parking lot at the polling place at Galena City Hall was full at mid-morning. Voters leaving and arriving in their vehicles at regular intervals caused some traffic issues.
Inside, there was a short line. There were 197 ballots cast just before 10 a.m.
An issue on the ballot in Cherokee County is liquor by the drink, which, if passed, would allow bars and restaurants with the required licenses to sell single servings of alcoholic drinks.
Julia Wammack, 74, a retired nursing home worker in Galena, said she voted “no.”
“I think there’s too much liquor and it ruins a lot of people’s lives,” Wammack said of her decision.
Larry Murray, 56, of Galena, works in a tribal casino in Oklahoma. He voted in favor of the issue.
“I thought it may increase revenue and expand economic growth,” Murray said. “I don’t see a problem with it.”
