Benji Tunnell: 'Darkness' not very edgy

Jeremiah Tucker: Beck’s ‘Record Club’ covers classic rock
It seems that Beck in 2010 — 16 years after the release of his breakthrough album “Mellow Gold” — holds a privileged place in pop music not unlike the one Bob Dylan held in the mid-’70s.

‘Lost’ world: Sixth, final season of enigmatic show begins next week
What is “Lost”? Is it ultimately a story of good vs. evil, science vs. faith, or something else entirely? What is the smoke monster? What’s with the island’s healing properties? Were the survivors of the crash of Oceanic Flight 815 pre-destined to be there?

Jeremiah Tucker: Good music found in televised events

Benji Tunnell: ‘Tyson’ is jarring
Looking at the man now, it’s hard to remember just how feared he was. He has collapsed in on himself, becoming almost a caricature of what he once was. Yet from the mid-’80s into the ’90s, there was no more dominant a fighter than Mike Tyson, and there has been no more spectacular a fall than that of the once unbeatable monster. That is what makes “Tyson,” available on DVD, so interesting.

Jeremiah Tucker: Soundtrack makes great gift for parents
In recent years the musician and producer T. Bone Burnett has specialized in making albums for people who still buy CDs. He put together the platinum-selling “O Brother, Where Art Thou” soundtrack and brought together Alison Kraus and Robert Plant for their admittedly great “Raising Sand” album.
-
Benji Tunnell: ‘Eli’ brims with hope, hellfire
I’ve often wondered what happened to Jules from “Pulp Fiction” in the subsequent years since leaving his hitman life to walk the earth. After finding his religious reawakening at the end of the barrel of a gun, he gave up his life of murder and shakedowns to explore his rekindled faith.

Absurdist drama on tap at MSSU
The MSSU Theatre Department will present an absurdist drama about a king who deals with his oncoming death. Eugene Ionesco’s “Exit the King” will be presented at 7:30 p.m. from Jan. 26 to Jan. 30 in the Bud Walton Theatre at Missouri Southern State University.

Diverse audience: Harlem Quartet to play Joplin church, nightclub
A performance of classical music in a popular Joplin nightclub went over so well that another one has been scheduled for next week. But the string quartet that will play shows glimmers and influences from the jazz music that filled such places.

Reatard’s musical career short but exciting
The punk rocker Jay Reatard — born Jimmy Lee Lindsey Jr. — was found dead in his Memphis home Wednesday morning. As of Thursday, a cause of death hadn’t been determined, but Reatard lived aggressively so however he died, I doubt it will shock me.
-
Benji Tunnell: NBC's late-night move lame
Jay Leno’s move to prime time smacked of desperation. It was a mad stab at trying to please everyone while still cutting costs and turning around a struggling network. It was bold, it was risky and it had no chance of succeeding. Now, NBC’s decision to move Jay Leno back to 10:30 p.m. Joplin time has alienated affiliates and angered its marquee stars.

Got cabin fever? Upcoming events will entice you out of house
When temperatures drop, some may find it easy to make like a bear and hibernate amid the comfort of indoor heating while bathing in the warm glow of the television. But just because it’s winter doesn’t mean that there’s nothing to get out and do.

Zombie hunter’s paradise: Branson attraction gives visitors chance to kill off the undead
It’s open season on zombies in Branson. The undead have a price on their heads in the Midwest’s Music City. Zombie hunters from near and far are lining up for the chance to unleash their laser weapons on the creatures of the night and feel the cold splash of fresh blood on their cheeks as zombie chests explode and splatter.

Jeremiah Tucker: Lil Wayne should stay in comfort zone
Last month the online retailer Amazon leaked hip-hop superstar Lil Wayne’s rock album “Rebirth” when it accidentally shipped 500 copies two months before its release date. Since then Lil Wayne has pushed back the album’s release until June, but after listening to “Rebirth” this week, here are some other projects I’d like to see happen soon.
-
Benji Tunnell: Support only good movies
Just a few years back I wrote about the box office slump of 2005. It was a stumbling block for Hollywood, a down year where even the ever-increasing admission prices couldn’t offset the declining attendance.

New Year’s Eve in Branson was a great time. The Branson Convention Center Hilton offered up a great one-night package for $299.

‘Blakroc’ collaboration deserving of follow-up
For New Year’s Eve the lady and I were supposed to go to Chicago to see The Black Keys, but I sold our tickets at the last minute because I didn’t feel like traveling and decided to save some money.
