Small works, big auction offered at Spiva

From staff reports

Spiva Center for the Arts is conducting its annual Small works auction, previously known as the 12x12 Auction. The annual fundraiser features 102 original works of art.

Over the past several months, artists were invited to pick up a 6x6, 9x12 or 12x12-inch square of plain Masonite on which to create, mount or invent an original work of art in any medium. The small works are on display in the Regional Gallery at Spiva. Minimum starting bids have been placed on the pieces.

A “rainmaker” designation was created for artists whose work brought in $300 or more in a previous auction.

The minimum bids for these pieces are set at $300 to acknowledge the importance of these accomplished artists. Several rainmakers are represented by national galleries where their work sells for a premium.

Bid sheets are posted adjacent to each piece and anyone can bid — in person at the center during business hours or by calling or e-mailing the center at kscott@spivaarts.org. Each entry and current bid information also may be seen online at www.spivaarts.org.

Bidding closes at the final bidding party at 7 p.m. Friday, Oct. 30. High bidders will take home original paintings, photographs, ceramics, mixed media pieces, fabric collages and watercolors with all proceeds supporting Spiva.

Film screening

At 7:30 p.m. Friday, Oct. 30, Spiva will screen “The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari,” the 1920 silent horror film set to an eerie musical soundtrack compiled by Shaun Conroy, Spiva’s gallery coordinator.

Those attending may bring snacks and beverages in containers with tight-fitting lids. Admission is by $5 voluntary contribution.

Spiva is open to the public from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday and 1 to 5 p.m. Sunday. It is closed Monday and major holidays. Admission to the galleries is by voluntary contribution with a suggested donation of $2 per adult and $1 for school aged children.

Details: 623-0183 or www.spivaarts.org.
