Quarter power: Piccadilly auction to raise funds for downtown group

JOPLIN, Mo. — Members of the Downtown Joplin Alliance thought they had an original idea when they took a trip to Lee’s Summit. What they discovered as a Piccadilly auction is known around Joplin as a paddle party.

“Instead of a bidding war, this is a live raffle,” said Trisha Patton, director of the alliance. “It’s something we thought was completely unique to Joplin. But what we found out is that Joplin has several of these.”

This auction promises to be bigger than other similar events, however -- this one includes a casino night and a silent auction. Set for Thursday at JB’s Piano Bar, the event is a fundraiser for the alliance.

Some serious prizes are up for grabs, including Missouri Tigers football tickets, dinner packages at Twin Hills Golf and Country Club, a diamond cluster ring set in 14-karat gold, hotel accommodations and tickets to the Kentucky Headhunters concert at Downstream Casino and more.

Participants armed with quarters throw them into buckets for certain items. After everyone has put in their quarters, a winner is drawn. The auction format is more exciting, Patton said, because chances to win are more equal.

“Everyone has a bingo-style chance of winning,” Patton said. “Everyone has the same bid-in price, anywhere from a quarter to three dollars.”

The event also includes a silent auction featuring a variety of items and casino games such as poker, blackjack, craps and roulette. Red Onion will cater the event, which is sponsored by Downstream Casino, Commerce Bank and Missouri Eagle.

Funds raised will benefit the alliance’s promotional programs, which include several efforts geared at helping downtown Joplin thrive, Patton said.

“The majority of the organization has been volunteer based,” Patton said. “As we continue to move forward, we want to help with programming, events and infrastructure downtown.”

Future events would include the continuation of Third Thursdays, and may include new events such as yoga or music programs at Spiva Park.
