Jesus wubs you: Christian concert adds dubstep

JOPLIN, Mo. — A Christian music festival returns for its second year with a little bit of magic and a lot of wub-wub-wubs.

Known for its distinctive wub-wub sounds, dubstep has taken off as a trend in electronic music. DJ Justin Ocean has his own take on it -- the electronic musician is part of the lineup for Uprising 2012.

Ocean has built up a reputation among music fans, said organizer Bryan Smith. For some of his songs, Ocean mixes lyrics from Christian music with modern electronic musical styles such as dubstep, trance and house. He has also performed standard, secular sets at places such as the Blue Note in Columbia, Mo.

“When I was visiting skate parks to tell people about this concert, I’d tell people that we had Justin Ocean,” Smith said. “They knew exactly who I was talking about. He’s made a pretty good name for himself.”

Consumed by Fire, the headliner for last year’s inaugural festival, leads the lineup again. Other featured acts include Offset Sunset, Duncan James, illusionist Cody Lowery and special guest J.D. Buckridge. Proceeds from the festival will benefit Children’s Haven of the Ozarks.

Organizer Bryan Smith said that the festival is meant to profile rising talent before they break big. Part rock concert, part revival, the festival is meant to give teens and young adults a fun, safe time.

He hopes to see a crowd of 300 to 400 this year. More than 200 attended last year’s event.
