Today is the last day to purchase tickets for the Joplin Humane Society’s eighth annual Fur Ball, the organization’s biggest fundraiser of the year.
The theme for the event is “Celebration of Lights,” and executive director Karen Aquino said that the lighted decorations will help to “create an atmosphere of elegance.”
The event will begin with cocktails and a silent auction at 6 p.m., with dinner, entertainment and a live auction beginning at 7 p.m. The Ninth Hour Quartet, a local gospel group, will perform.
“They do a variety of different songs,” Aquino said of the quartet.
Among the items to be featured during the auctions are a 42-inch TV, a custom made mattress, artwork and three puppies optioned for adoption — two purebred chihuahuas and a Brussels Griffon mix.
Aquino said the humane society hopes to raise more than $50,000 during this year’s Fur Ball.
“We use the funds to operate the shelter, to buy medicine for the animals, and to pay the utilities,” she said.
Last month, the shelter was moved from a smaller home on Swede Lane to a 20,000-square-foot building on North Main Street Road at Emperor Lane.
The building has a pet clinic, a cat quarters, indoor and outdoor puppy and dog kennels, quarantine rooms, and quarters for meetings and educational programs. It has state-of-the-art cleaning and disinfecting methods so rooms and animal cages can be kept clean easier than at the old location and so there will be less smell.
Tickets for the Fur Ball are $50 for members of the Joplin Humane Society and $60 for non-members. Tickets will not be available at the door, so registration must be made by today.
