Road trips: Back to the past

From staff reports

news@joplinglobe.com

At one time the Swiss Villa Ampitheatre in Lampe, just west of Branson, was a powerhouse venue for concerts, featuring the biggest names in rock and country, including the likes of George Jones, REO Speedwagon and Lee Greenwood.

After a 10-year slumber, the venue wakes up with a new name and a lineup of many of the same rock and country acts — including George Jones, REO Speedwagon and Lee Greenwood.

Now called the Black Oak Mountain Amphitheater, the storied concert venue has announced its 2010 concert season that includes BB King, John Michael Montgomery, Travis Tritt, Tanya Tucker, Foreigner, Styx, Kansas and Pat Benatar.

The 7,000-seat amphitheater has been renovated to include a larger stage with a new roof, easier access, improved restrooms and amenities (“especially for the ladies,” according to the venue’s Web site) and state-of-the-art sound and lights. About 2,000 of the venue’s seats are on a lawn at the back of the facility.

John McEuen, a founding member of the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, is the venue’s talent consultant and helped book the acts for the upcoming summer season. He said that he chased after acts that wouldn’t normally appear in Branson.

“Branson is a music capital, and this venue can only help fill theaters and hotel rooms,” McEuen told the Branson Daily News. “I really see people watching George Jones one night and staying in town to watch Jim Stafford or Shoji Tabuchi the next.”

The Nitty Gritty Dirt Band is booked — of course — to play with Brewer & Shipley, POCO and Foghat on Aug. 8. The venue is seeking to host other types of events, such as festivals and car shows.

The following acts are booked to play at the Black Oak Mountain Amphitheater, located at 1728 State Highway H in Lampe. Future acts will be announced on the venue’s Web site, www.blkoakamp.com.
