JOPLIN, Mo. —
The Webb City Carnegie Library will bring back the big band sound of the 1940s Saturday as officials continue a centennial celebration of the library district.
The celebration will kick off at 6:30 p.m. at the Route 66 Event Center in Webb City with dance instruction by Susan Benson Crutcher that will lead into a performance by the Pinocchio Dancers. At 7:30, the Cecie Fritz trio, with special guest Bruce Benson on trumpet, will take the stage to play big band-era music.
Centennial Committee chairman and Pinnochio School of Dance owner Carolyn McGowan said that she has focused a lot of work into the first celebration to be held at the event center.
"This is the one I am excited about because this is the music I grew up with," McGowan said. "I think we have everything really coming together for Saturday's event."
The music isn't the only special event planned for Saturday. State Sen. Ron Richard will present a resolution honoring the library's 100th birthday.
"We made this celebration a big a deal because that's what it is," McGowan said. "We have our displays up in the library covering fashion, best-selling books and what was big during that time and we change them every other month. Everyone gets to see them when they come into the library and we have had a lot of feedback on our hard work."
As library officials move through the decades for their centennial celebration, officials will hold more vocal music and dance instructions akin to Saturday's events. The Route 66 Event Center will continue to host the events until November, when the events switch back to the library through their conclusion in March with a celebration of the modern era.
McGowan said that each celebration will contain an additional era-appropriate dance and vocal performance.
"I love showing people the authentic dance moves from the era and they get to use them immediately when we have the right music afterwards," McGowan said. "Younger people have really taken to our previous events and I think that will continue to grow more as we move into modern times for our events."
