Jazz singer to open local concert series

Joplin Memorial Hall will kick off the 2010 Music Series with jazz singer Javon Jackson at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Feb. 5, at 212 W. 8th St.

A Carthage native, Jackson came into international prominence as a member of Art Blakely and the Jazz Messengers. As a member of Blakely’s Jazz Messengers, he toured and made many recordings with the legendary drummer.

In addition to Blakely, Jackson has toured and recorded with Elvin Jones, Freddie Hubbard, Betty Carter, Cedar Walton, Ron Carter, Donald Byrd, Dr. Lonnie Smith, Richard Davis, Bobby Hutcherson, Curtis Fuller and Stanley Turrentine.

As a recording artist, Jackson has appeared on more than 125 recordings. Additionally, he has developed a formidable career as a leader, recording and touring throughout the world. Javon’s current musical group, The Javon Jackson Band, incorporates many styles, including jazz, funk, R&B; and rock.

The 2010 Music Series also will feature performances by the MSSU Jazz Orchestra on April 6, the musical group Bach to the Future on June 5, Tulsa’s own Salsa Rhythm Project on Aug. 13, and Irish and Celtic music’s The Dorians on Oct. 2.

Ticket prices are $20 reserved main floor and $15 for reserved mezzanine and balcony. Season tickets are $50 per person.
