JET expands to include IFC Midnight films

JOPLIN, Mo. — A new agreement with an indie-film distributor means that Joplin Electric Theater will increase its offerings.

The theater has paired with IFC Midnight, a branch of IFC Films that markets horror, sci-fi, thrillers and more. The theater will show its first movie from IFC Midnight, "Crawlspace," today.

"They contacted us and said they had this new line available," said Jennifer McKeough, owner of the theater. "IFC Films is a high-caliber independent film distributor, and they have this separate genre that's a bit darker."

The theater has shown IFC films during past events, including "Loneliest Planet." IFC Midnight was created in 2010 and releases films to theaters and across video-on-demand platforms.

"Crawlspace" is the story of Pine Gap, a U.S. military base in the Australian desert, and the rescue of scientists from the base after an attack from unknown forces.

The movie is directed by Justin Dix, who has worked with George Lucas and Roger Donaldson.

This and other IFC Midnight movies will be shown on Fridays at a different time from the theater's usual offerings. McKeough said she thinks the movies will attract a different type of crowd.

Future movies to be shown include "Room 237," a documentary that explores whether Stanley Kubrick's "The Shining" contains evidence indicating the moon landing of 1969 was a hoax.

"Crawlspace" will be shown at 8 p.m. at the Hive, located at 506 S. Main. Admission: $10. Concessions available.

Details: 417-434-2944.
