Carthage Artwalk to include 'yarn bombing'

CARTHAGE, Mo. — Some of the art on display at today's Carthage Artwalk will be warm and fuzzy ... or at least fuzzy.

In addition to paintings, sculptures and other works that will be on display, parts of the downtown square will be "yarn-bombed" by students in the summer art camp underway at artCentral. Students at the camp also will be displaying their more traditional works in an exhibit in the Jasper County Courthouse, according to Sally Armstrong, artCentral director.

Yarn bombing is a type of street art that uses colorful knitted or crocheted yarn, rather than paint or chalk.

"It will go on things like small trees, fence posts, benches and planters," Armstrong said. "And we hope some other people who attend art walk will join in and add their own touches."

The yarn bombing will stay up for at least a week, because the square will be the setting for a cruise night event the following Thursday as part of the International Route 66 festival in Joplin, added Wendi Douglas, director of the Carthage Convention and Visitors Bureau and an Artwalk organizer.

Armstrong said this year is the first time that the creations of art camp students will be displayed during Artwalk. Fifty students participated in the camp.

"Normally we have a show here, and just parents and grandparents come," she said. "It made sense to take it downtown where more people could see it."

In activities to start at 6 p.m., 19 other artists will be displaying their works at sites around the square. The featured artist will be Dan Auguston, of Springfield, whose work will be on display at United Missouri Bank.

This month's Artwalk also will mark the first time for a new gallery location Ñ Cherry's Custom Framing is opening at 311 Main St. Other display sites will be at Smith Midwest, Rumor Has it, Koka Art Gallery and Mother Road Coffee.

  • mug_joe-hadsall-112613.jpg Globe Phone Test: Concept is clever, but transitions tricky with Asus PadFone X

It's kind of embarrassing to point this out, but "Candy Crush Saga" is one of the best ways to illustrate how well the Asus PadFone X, a smartphone and tablet combo really works.

Anyone who has more than one device will understand this situation completely: Let's say a player fires up "Candy Crush" on his tablet computer and really digs the game. A lot. So much so that he downloads it to his smartphone.

Only there's one problem: All the progress made on the tablet is stuck on the tablet. The smartphone has a completely separate path of progress, meaning the player has to play each level twice. This makes progress through the game twice as long. (This problem can be fixed by signing up for the game on Facebook, but no one really wants their Facebook friends to know they spend so much time crushin' candy.)

The Asus PadFone X is the dream solution to this nightmare of a problem.

Available exclusively from AT&T, the device is actually two devices. A standalone smartphone can be plugged into a tablet computer, meaning the owner can take his pick of how he wants to play the game, and all the progress he makes is saved on one device's hard drive.

AT&T loaned us a device that we tested for more than two weeks -- didn't like having to send it back -- and we found a lot of its qualities and quirks.
