PITTSBURG, Kan. —
Things will get spooky at Memorial Auditorium Friday and Saturday, promises Kaye Lewis, director of the Midwest Regional Ballet.
At 7:30 p.m. each evening, the American Opera Studio from Kansas City will present “The Macabre,” which features selected scenes and solo pieces ranging from musical theater and jazz to art song and opera.
Large-scale ensemble singing will be paired with solo song in a program that highlights the spooky nature of Halloween. Think fire dancing by Tricks of the Light, and aerial ballet and dance incorporated by the Midwest Regional Ballet.
“Everything from vampires to Egyptian mummies is included,” said William Hall, director of the American Opera Studio. “This program really has something for everyone.”
Attendees can dress up
Hall encourages audience members to come in costume.
The American Opera Studio, founded in 1998, is a registered not-for-profit in Kansas. Students are professionals or are in training for performance careers.
The Midwest Regional Ballet is based in Joplin and draws dance students from around the region. Last year, Lewis and the ballet company produced “Nightmare Before Christmas” in two runs at Memorial Auditorium.
It also performed with the Kansas City group at the Macabre Ball in Kansas City last year, which led to Hall and Lewis collaborating on the Pittsburg performance.
Getting onstage
In this production, Lewis, an award winning choreographer, will also be a performer.
“I’ll be dancing the role of a vampire,” she said. “It’s such an amazing experience, combining opera and dance.”
