EXHIBITS
~ "Amazing Amazonians and Beautiful Boats,” an exhibit at the Spiva Art Gallery at Missouri Southern State University.
The exhibit features a variety of photographs from South America and is being held in connection with the Brazil semester activities at MSSU.
"Amazing Amazonians and Beautiful Boats" will be through Sept. 24. The gallery is open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday. Admission is free.
The black and white and color photographs in the exhibition were shot by James Bogan and Patrik Pardini. Both document the riverine culture of the Amazon by depicting the construction of boats from native woods utilizing long-evolved local designs. In addition, some of Professor Bogan's photographs cover the filming of The Adventures of the Amazon Queen, itself a documentary of the dreams and skills of a Brazilian artisan.
Bogan is a professor of art history, a poet, and a filmmaker who has taught at the Missouri University of Science and Technology in Rolla since 1969. His scholarly publications include “Sparks of Fire” (1982), an experimental anthology on William Blake, and “Burden of Dreams” (1984), a casebook on Les Blank's film. “Ozark Meandering,” a book of maximal poems and essays was published in 1999.
In 1986 he lectured at the Federal University of Para in Brazil as a Fulbright Fellow, where he also began his career as a documentary filmmaker with T-Shirt Cantata followed by The Hammock Variations (1996) and The Adventures of the Amazon Queen (2007). He is a curators' teaching professor and has won the president's award for outstanding teaching in the University of Missouri System. He continues his research in the Ozarks and in the Amazon on foot and in kayak.
Pardini is a professional photographer based in Brazil, whose work has been widely exhibited there and in the United States.
