Annual College Heights Missions Week under way

JOPLIN, Mo. — College Heights Christian School high school students are out of the classroom for their annual Missions Week, which emphasizes volunteerism and service to others. Nearly 90 students and sponsors plan to volunteer locally at Crosslines, Spring River Christian Village, Neighborhood Life House, Missouri Baptist Children’s Home, Hispanic Outreach and Watered Gardens.

Groups of students and sponsors are in Jamaica and Mexico City to work with locals on service projects. Three groups are also traveling to Red Bird Mission Work Camp in Beverly, Ky., to Cookson Hills Children’s Home in Kansas, Okla., and to Ozark, Ark., to complete various service projects.

Eleven students were at Watered Gardens on Monday, clearing out rooms in the basement and then mudding the walls in anticipation of sanding and painting them later this week. Their work will help renovate part of the building so the organization can expand its outreach programs, operations director Marsha Whitford said.

“I think they’ll be a great help,” she said. “The team leaders that are with them are experienced, and the kids have willing hearts to help, which is a plus. It’s a win-win.”
