Joplin

• There will a Baha’i fireside talk at 7 p.m. today in the home of Mr. and Mrs. John Taggart, 2605 E. 20th St.

The speaker will be Charles George, of Chicago, who will speak on “Why We Need Another Religion.”

• The 55+ Lunch Bunch of First United Methodist Church, 501 W. Fourth St., will meet from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Tuesday.

The guest speaker will be Dr. C.J. Huff, superintendent of the Joplin School District. Huff, a graduate of the College of Education, received his bachelor’s degree from Pittsburg (Kan.) State University and his master’s degree and specialist’s education leadership at the University of Arkansas. He has served as superintendent of the Eldon School District, principal for Espy Elementary in Nixa and Doling Weaver Elementary in Springfield, as well as also working as an elementary teacher and assistant principal.

Special entertainment will be provided by Pete Havely and his banjo. The theme for the luncheon is a luau. Vacation clothing and leis are welcome attire.

Cost of the catered luncheon is $6. The deadline for reservations is noon Monday.

n The Tribute Quartet from Nashville, Tenn., will perform a concert at 7 p.m. Friday at New Site Baptist Church, 1925 Farm Road 1060.

The quartet was named the Singing News magazine “Horizon Group of the Year” in 2008.

Admission is free, however an offering will be received.

• A spaghetti dinner and pie auction benefit for Steve Young will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 16, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church cafeteria.

The pie auction will be conducted at 6 p.m.

The price for the dinner is $5 for adults and $3 for children 10 and younger. Donations also will be accepted.

Young recently was injured in a fall. All proceeds will go toward helping him with medical bills and other finances incurred during his recent injury.

• The Signature Quartet will perform a gospel concert at 6 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 16, at Freedom Christian Fellowship, 318 Glory Way.

The group sings Southern gospel music. The public is invited.

Pittsburg, Kan.

• Eric Hurd will be the featured speaker at a banquet meeting on Saturday, Jan. 16, of the Full Gospel Business Men’s Fellowship International, Pittsburg Chapter No. 650.

The meal begins at 6:30 p.m. and the meeting is set for 7:15 p.m. at the Lamplighter Inn, 4020 Parkview Drive. The cost is $7 a person. Meal reservations are required by Friday. The meeting is open to all interested people.
