For the record, Silas weighs 2,150 pounds and Caleb, 2,110 pounds, said their owner, Darrel Franson, of Mount Vernon. Each stands 61 inches at the hip.
Born to be a team

MOUNT VERNON, Mo. — Silas and Caleb are twin steers with a combined weight of 4,260 pounds.
For the record, Silas weighs 2,150 pounds and Caleb, 2,110 pounds, said their owner, Darrel Franson, of Mount Vernon. Each stands 61 inches at the hip.
The twins could become oxen, if he gets a yoke, has time to work them and the animals agree to pulling a wagon.
Franson’s journey to this point began in 1978 when he bought a team of horses he trained to pull a covered wagon. One of the horses died at 30 years and its brother at 32 years in May 2007, Franson said.
The horses pulled the wagon for at least 6,000 miles at different events to raise funds for various causes, Franson said.
“My dad always told me that the good Lord can give a man one good team in his life and I’ve had mine,” he said.
He vows to not have another team of horses but this does not stop him from wanting to get his wagon rolling again.
On Oct. 16, 2004, Caleb and Silas were born, weighing 70 and 75 pounds, and were weaned April 15, 2005, with a combined weight of 841 pounds, he said. They had a 205-day adjusted combined weight of 979 pounds.
“By their behavior they endeared themselves to me. They did then and continue to do so today. They do everything together from the time they were nursing their mother to walking together,” he said.
The mother was a Simmental-Charolais cross and the father was an Angus.
“From the first time I saw them standing together, I visualized seeing them with a yoke pulling the wagon,” he said.
The twins were not sold with other weaned calves but pampered and kept in the same pens. They had grain as part of their ration until last spring when they were relegated to eating quality hay.
He also keeps them close to the house so they will retain their gentle disposition.
