SPRINGFIELD, Mo. — Heavy rain and wind storms on March 31 failed to stop a bull sale at the Springfield Marketing Center, where 40 head averaged $2,102. The sale was held by the Southwest Missouri Beef Cattle Improvement Association. Bulls sold in a range of $1,400 to $4,100 per head, said Eldon Cole, University of Missouri Extension livestock specialist in Mt. Vernon. The sale on Oct. 30, 2007, saw 24 head average $2,250. The 36 bulls sold in March of 2007 averaged $1,528. At the recent sale, Deer Creek Simmental, Welch, Okla., paid $4,100 for a black, polled Simmental sold by Owen Brothers Cattle Co., Bois D’Arc. Two Simmental bulls averaged $3,100. Thirty Angus bulls averaged $2,125. The top Angus was $3,100, for a bull sold by Clearwater Farm, Springfield. It sold to Les Cole, Stockton. Six Charolais bulls averaged $1,792. The top sale was $2,150, paid by Bob Scott, Niangua. The bull was sold by Beiswinger Charolais Ranch, Halfway. Two composite breeds sold for $1,850 and $1,550. It was the first time for composite breeds to be in the sale. The next sale will be held Oct. 27. Soybeans up, corn down State departments of agriculture in Missouri, Kansas and Oklahoma have provided prospective planting reports for this year compared to 2007 acres: n Missouri — 5.2 million acres of soybeans, up 13 percent from 2007; 3.1 million acres of corn, down 10 percent; and 90,000 acres of milo, down 18 percent. Kansas — 3.2 million acres of soybeans and 3.9 million acres of corn, unchanged; and 2.7 million acres of milo, down 4 percent.
