Seventh St. Serving up 'the real thing': Brothers offer authentic Mexican cuisine By Mike Pound

Things like the carne asada con verdura that Antonio and Guadalupe Silva serve up at their restaurant, Lalo’s Taqueria, at 2501 E. Seventh St. Guadalupe tossed some fresh onions, tomatoes and cilantro onto the grill in the small but efficient restaurant kitchen and tossed it with a pair of spatulas. Then he added some steak to the vegetable-herb mix and grilled it some more. While the meat was cooking, he placed two fresh flour tortillas on the grill to warm them. Then he scooped the steak, vegetables and cilantro up off the grill and placed them on a plate that already contained heaping helpings of rice and refried beans, added the warmed tortillas and a meal was ready to be served. What Antonio and Guadalupe (and a large number of family members) have created is your basic authentic Mexican restaurant smack dab in the middle of Joplin. The brothers call what they serve up “the real thing,” and it’s hard to argue with them. “You can’t find anything like this any place in Joplin,” said Guadalupe, pointing to the restaurant’s menu. One of the most popular items on the is the tortas, both the torta normal and the torta especial. A torta is pretty much a sandwich served on toasted Mexican bread — but what a sandwich. The torta normal has refried beans, melted cheese, lettuce, tomato, onion, jalepeno peppers, avocado and your choice of meat. The torta especial is similar but much larger and comes with a greater selection of meats. For example, the cubana torta is served with ham, hot dog and steak. Lalo’s (named after Antonio’s 5-year-old son) has been open since September and has slowly developing a loyal following. The Silva brothers said they were looking for a way to make money and didn’t really want to work for anyone else, so they opened a restaurant. This despite the fact that they had never run a restaurant before. Their sister, however, does run a restaurant so they had some knowledge of the business. And they did have a pretty decent kitchen background. Food has always been a big deal in the Silva family and as boys, Antonio and Guadalupe spent more than their share of time in the kitchen. “Everything on the menu we already knew how to make,” Antonio said with a smile. If you scan the menu at Lalo’s, you find plenty of things you’ve seen before and several things perhaps you haven’t. Do yourself a favor and try as much as you can. If you’re adventurous, you can even try some beef tongue, or beef intestine with your meal. Both meats, the Silvas said, are commonly found in most authentic Mexican restaurants. For the record, Antonio likes beef intestine. Guadalupe does not. The Silvas make just about everything they serve from scratch, including the salsa verde that they make using deep-fried jalepeno peppers. The brothers pride themselves on their fresh ingredients — while preparing a torta normal, Guadalupe scooped a heaping helping of avocado right out of the peel — and their low prices.
