Braggin' Rights up for grabs: Business invites chefs to show their stuff during competition

Victor Ferguson’s chicken is moist and tasty after two hours on the rotisserie. He marinates it first, then bastes it with his own secret recipe.

But as good as it is, it is unlikely to challenge some of the flavorful chicken and ribs that will be barbecued by contestants in the first Braggin’ Rights competition this Saturday at The Fireplace Shoppe, 2120 E. Seventh St.

Ferguson, owner of The Fireplace Shoppe, is staging the contest for local barbecue chefs to show off their cooking skills. Proceeds from the event will benefit the Local Disaster Relief Fund of the American Red Cross in Joplin, which helped more than 700 storm victims in Southwest Missouri after the May 10 tornado outbreak.

The competition will be held from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday. The cooks will set up on the parking lot of nearby Locke Supply, which also is sponsoring the contest. An eating area will be created inside of The Fireplace Shoppe.

Ribs and chicken, prepared on slow smokers, will be the main entrees. Hot dogs will be available for children. Caveman Cuisine of Carthage is providing the coleslaw, potato salad and homemade baked beans. The minimum donation is $4 per plate for as long as the food lasts.

“It will be a plate of barbecue with the trimmings,” said Ferguson. “They can eat as often as they want at $4 per plate.”

The competition will feature several local contestants who will compete for the 2008 Braggin’ Rights trophy.

“We have several local venues for barbecue in Joplin, but we don’t have a barbecue competition. I thought we needed something local,” said Ferguson, who hopes to develop the competition into an annual contest.

With the price of gasoline reaching record levels, he said there is a greater emphasis on spending more time at home, and grilling is a popular home activity. The Fireplace Shoppe features three brands of grills, including Broil King, Napoleon and Primo, and is an outlet for accessories, including specialty woods, sauces and rubs.

The woods available for smoky flavoring are white cedar, sugar maple, hickory, cherry, apple and mesquite. Sauces and rubs by Rufus Teague, a Kansas City company, also are available. Ferguson said white cedar, soaked in water, is an excellent flavoring for grilled salmon.

Carla Graham, spokeswoman for the Joplin Red Cross, said the money raised during the contest will be most helpful.

“The Red Cross provided direct assistance to more than 700 individuals affected by the EF4 tornado on May 10. The assistance totaled $289,000,” she said. “We are very grateful for the $1 donations as well as the $1,000 donations.” The money will be used to replenish the disaster relief fund. The Red Cross, she said, ranks natural disasters by severity and that there are five designations.

“We were ranked as a No. 4, which is next to the worst designation,” she said.
