Now halfway through the competition, members of the Joplin Family Y’s Greatest Loser program took time on Tuesday to evaluate their progress. “Being halfway through this thing, your motivation may be starting to get low,” said Steven Benfield, health and fitness director. “It’s time to re-energize.” Participants reviewed the initial applications for the Greatest Loser, and filled out worksheets to compare their initial goals with the progress they have made. After the mid-way evaluation, they were able to then able to modify or make new long-term goals. Motivation also played a key role in the discussion, with Benfield asking group members to cite some things that are helping them stay focused during the weight-loss competition. For Kassie Conrad, of Joplin, it’s a pair of jeans stapled to her wall that she hopes to wear again soon. What motivates Fred Frerer, of Joplin, is that he’s noticing that clothes are starting to fit better. Doug Phipps, of Carl Junction, said it’s the scale and knowing that he’s going to have to step on it each week. Dee Schofield, of Carl Junction, said she’s motivated by the adrenaline high she gets from a good workout, especially one exercise in particular. “Zumba is what makes me hit that peak,” she said. And Lisa Nelson, of Joplin, said that people who have noticed that she has lost weight and commented on it have provided motivation to continue her efforts. “It’s nice to get some feedback,” she said.
