They lost, now they're winners: Joplin Family Y announces male, female winners of weight-loss contest

They lost. Big time.

On Tuesday, the winners were announced for the second year of the Joplin Family Y’s Greatest Loser program, and the numbers spoke for themselves.

As a group, the 10 remaining members lost 226 pounds over the last 13 weeks. In terms of inches lost, it was 1651/2, according to health and fitness director Steven Benfield.

The overall male and female winners were Tom Michael, of Webb City, who lost 50.6 pounds; and Susan Ryan, also of Webb City, who lost 28.8 pounds.

More than 150 people had applied to participate this year, with interviews used to narrow the field down to 12 men and women who dedicated themselves to losing weight and living healthy. They met each week for presentations on such topics as nutrition, eating and shopping healthy and body composition. They also met in groups with personal trainers who monitored their progress and helped shape their workout routines.

Two Greatest Loser members had to drop out along the way due to conflicts in their personal lives, Benfield said.

This was the second year for the Y program, said Benfield, and plans are for it to become an annual summer event.

While this year’s Greatest Loser didn’t run as long as last summer’s, Benfield said that he was impressed with the results.

“Last time it was two weeks longer, and (Tom) came within one pound of last year’s winner,” he said.

Benfield said that interest in the Greatest Loser was so high that a second, informal group was formed. They didn’t meet with trainers or listen to the weekly speakers, but still committed themselves to losing weight.

“We originally had 40 people,” he said. “It dropped to about half that, but they did really well on their own.”

Michael, who secured the win by losing 10 pounds during the final week, credited his family and friends with supporting him as he worked to reach his goal.

“I couldn’t have done it without the support of Steven and the Y, from the personal trainers and the speakers ... they were super motivating,” he said.
