news@joplinglobe.com It’s an interesting claim: Soaking up some UV rays not only help you look good, but it could protect you from breast cancer. Heat Wave Tanning Salon, 3929 E. Seventh St., is taking part in a nationwide effort to educate people about the benefits of indoor tanning. In July, they participated in the D-feat Breast Cancer campaign. Customers were asked for donations to support vitamin D/breast cancer research: $1 for a pink ribbon and $5 for a cancer-awareness bracelet. According to manager Angie Collier, vitamin D produced by ultraviolet light has been shown to lower the rate of colon and breast cancer. “I think tanning is great. It helps lower the risk of cancer and helps with skin problems and depression,” she said. Heat Wave’s home page raves about the benefits of tanning. “Do you feel stressed, tired, overworked or depressed?” it asks. “A little UV light can go a long way in making you look and feel healthier along with providing much-needed vitamin D for your health.” Of course, not everyone agrees. A ‘long stretch’ Mag Seedorf, a board-certified nurse practitioner at Freeman Cancer Institute, thinks the claim is a misrepresentation of the facts. “It’s interesting how we can twist things to make them sound good for us,” Seedorf said. According to a recent study by the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, patients diagnosed with colon cancer who had abundant vitamin D in their blood were less likely to die during a follow-up period than those who were deficient in the vitamin. However, Seedorf said it’s a “long stretch” to link vitamin D produced by UV light and the prevention of breast cancer. “A lack of vitamin D did not cause that cancer,” she said.
