Webb City starts fast, races past Carthage

CARTHAGE, Mo. — Webb City, keyed by a 28-point first quarter, beat Carthage 67-20 on Friday night in a Central Ozark Conference Large Division prep football opener.

The Cardinals, ranked No.1 and two-time defending champion in Class 4, won their 84th straight regular-season game.

The Cardinals, who seemed to start each possession with excellent field position, led 48-6 at halftime in Baker Stadium.

The start of the game, because of lightning, was delayed an hour.

Said Cardinal coach John Roderique: “The delay didn’t bother our players. They were excited they were going to play the game rather than have it postponed. They were focused.”

The rain stopped at about the 8 p.m. start. But the Tigers had big problems combating the mud.

Said Tiger coach Jon Guidie: “Our breakdowns of specialty teams and lack of ball security were factors in the first half. We basically had five turnovers with two high snaps (one resulting in a safety) and three interceptions.

“We stressed that this week — the play of our specialty teams and taking care of the ball,” Guidie said. “Give Webb City credit. They have a way of making you do things you don’t want to do.”

Said Roderique: “Things break down and there are times it can become tough.

“I was proud of our performance,” Roderique said. “Every jersey got dirty.”

Webb City possessions in the first period started at the Carthage 35, 35, 43, 25 and 37. Touchdowns were by quarterback John Roderique (rushes of 35 and 13 yards), running back Trey Parra (4-yard run) and running back Phoenix Johnson (31 pass from Roderique).

The Cardinals, in the second period, scored on Kohl Slaughter’s 12-yard pass from Roderique, Kiante Hardin’s 40-yard interception return and Johnson’s 13-yard run.

Alex Easley kicked four extra points in the first half.

Scoring for the Cardinals in the second half were quarterback Mason Williams (18-yard run), Devin Pickett (8-yard run) and Parra (75-yard kickoff return).

Seth Beckner scored for the Tigers in the second and third periods on carries of 29 and 5 yards. Cameron Priester, with 10 seconds left in the contest, tallied on a 4-yard run. Parra answered that with the kickoff return.

Carthage was held to 130 rushing yards and 53 passing on 2-for-14 accuracy. Beckner rushed 16 times for 92 yards.

Webb City rushed for 310 yards and passed for 58. Johnson carried 11 times for 90 yards and Roderique completed 3 of 5 for the 58.

The teams continue in the COC next on the road next Friday night. Webb City is at Republic and Carthage visits Ozark.
