Injuries have Webb City looking at backups

Webb City head football coach John Roderique and his staff have been shuffling players this week as a result of injuries suffered in last Monday night’s game against Springfield Hillcrest.

Just in case, of course, if the changes are needed for Saturday’s 1:30 p.m. home MSHSAA Class 4 quarterfinal game with Sullivan in a clash of 12-0 teams.

Center Seth Watson, a two-year starter, and right guard Mason Kent, both seniors, limped off the field on Monday night with knee and ankle injuries, respectively.

“I just know those two couldn’t do much Wednesday,” Roderique said.

Plus, junior running back Trey Parra, because of a nagging hamstring, didn’t play against the Hornets.

Sophomore defensive end Taylor Arterburn could move to center, Roderique said, with sophomore Drake Humphrey taking over for Arterburn. Junior offensive tackle James Fowler will replace Kent, if necessary, with senior Brent Wilson moving into Fowler’s “old” position.

Roderique said that David Dodson, the Cardinals’ senior defensive tackle replaced by junior Easton Carver, had knee surgery last week.

Of course, with the assistance of trainer Craig Jennings, those changes may not be necessary.

Jose Speer a leader

Webb City end Jose Speer was in on 10 tackles in the 55-10 win against Hillcrest for District 4 supremacy.

Dalton Humphrey, Drake’s senior brother, and Todd Fowler, James’ senior brother, added 9 and 6 tackles, respectively.

Speer had 21⁄2 sacks with Carver logging the one-half.

Sullivan seeking first title

The Eagles, making their eighth appearance in the playoffs, lost 31-0 to another model of Eagles — Joplin Memorial — in the 1976 Class 3A final at Missouri Southern.

Sullivan’s Pat Burke is in his 11th year overall with the Eagles and sixth as head coach. The graduate of Union High School and Southeast Missouri State began coaching with a six-year stint as an assistant at St. Clair.

Burke, who assisted Tim Rinne at Sullivan, guided the Eagles to a 6-4 record last year. They reached the Class 3 semifinals in 2008 — losing to St. Louis Cardinal Ritter — and lost to Mexico in the first round in 2009.

Burke said the Eagles, 6-0 in the Four Rivers Conference, planned to leave just before noon today and will work out at Joplin High School’s Junge Field.

Roderique recalled that Sullivan was kind enough to allow the Cardinals to work out at the Eagles’ stadium a couple of times en route to the Show-Me Bowl in St. Louis.
