Hill leads Hillcrest past Carl Junction

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. — Quarterback Jonah Hill accounted for 370 yards and all five touchdowns as Hillcrest blanked Carl Junction 35-0 Thursday night at Shumate Stadium in a Class 4 District 4 first-round game.

The second-seeded Hornets (9-1), who shared the Ozark Conference title with Lebanon, also are at home for Wednesday night’s second-round game against Carthage (8-2). The third-seeded Tigers downed Marshfield 48-40 in their district opener.

Hill completed 19 of 32 passes for 333 yards and two touchdowns and had 37 yards and three touchdowns on the ground. Both touchdown passes went to Matt Rush for 21 yards early in the first quarter and 20 yards late in the third period.

The Hornets, who had three turnovers in the first quarter, finished with 473 total yards.

Carl Junction (3-7) gained 148 total yards, including 127 rushing. The Bulldogs also turned the ball over five times — two interceptions and three fumbles, all in the first half.

Chris Whelan rushed for 45 yards on 10 carries, and Lucas Hertzberg gained 41 yards on nine attempts. Quarterback Dustin Satterlee netted 22 yards on seven carries and completed 6 of 15 passes for 21 yards. Matt Magee, J Thomas and Connor Rohmiller caught two passes apiece.

The Hornets took a 7-0 lead when Hill hit Rush with a 21-yard pass just over two minutes into the game.

The Hornets pulled away with two scores in the last two minutes of the first half for a 21-0 lead at the intermission. Hill’s eight-yard run came after the Bulldogs’ fifth turnover, and a two-yard TD by Hill capped a 72-yard, 22-second drive that was set up by Hill’s 52-yard completion to Juwan Johnson.
