Ed Ingle hired as tennis coach at Joplin High School

The name Ingle has been associated with Joplin High School tennis for several years.

The Ingles — siblings David, Christopher, Hannah and Sarah — have graduated. Sarah, the youngest, played for the Eagles last fall.

But there’s a chance the name association could remain with the Eagles for some time.

Ed Ingle, their dad, has been on the job for a week as coach after being named to succeed the resigning Sean McWilliams as both girls and boys coach.

The girls open their season by entertaining Nevada at 4:30 p.m. on Aug. 29.

Ed Ingle actually has been a familiar name in the Joplin tennis community for several years.

The elder Ingle, who currently serves as the director of tennis at the Joplin Athletic Complex, came to Joplin in 2000 to work at the Millennium Tennis and Fitness Club.

Ingle, originally from northern California and a tennis player for two seasons at Sacramento Community College, said he’s been working in tennis for more than 30 years.

Said Joplin R-8 athletic director Jeff Starkweather: “Obviously, we’re very happy to get someone with Ed’s knowledge and experience in tennis. He’s well known in the Joplin tennis community. We’re excited to have him aboard for both the boys and girls programs.”

Said Ingle: “I love to develop young people not only as tennis players but as people. Obviously, tennis can emulate life in making decisions and just having fun. The development of young people is an exciting part (of the position).

“I’m a little nervous,” Ingle said. “It should help that I have a history with several of the players.”

Ingle is married to the former Julie Overton of Neosho.
