Joplin bows in fifth-place game

Joplin defeated Carthage 11-3, then fell to Park Hill South 6-1 in the fifth-place game Saturday in the Paige Neal/Christina Freeman Softball Tournament at Gene Bassman Softball Complex.

Joplin collected 14 hits against Carthage, including three for extra bases. Tamara Mascher was 4-for-4 with a double and three RBI.

“All in all, we played really good softball all weekend long with the exception of two innings on defense,” said Joplin head coach Kirk Harryman. “The good thing is we can work on that in practice.”

Sophomore Michaela Sennett allowed five hits against Carthage and pitched a six-inning complete game.

Joplin scored in every inning except the second. The Eagles took a 4-0 lead with a three-run third inning and led 9-0 before Carthage scored three runs in the sixth. The Eagles scored twice in the bottom of the inning and ended the game under the eight-run rule.

The Eagles’ Kristen Tyler was 3-for-4 with an RBI and Kenzie Goswick had two hits and an RBI. Carthage left fielder Rylee Parrish had two hits.

In the fifth-place game, Park Hill South broke a 1-1 tie with a run in the fourth inning, then added four runs in the fifth inning. Jordin Woodward had two hits and an RBI as Park Hill South outhit Joplin 6-5.

“There are some things we need to do better,” Harryman said. “I like where we’re going. We haven’t turned the corner yet, but I think we might have turned the blinker on.”
