Lakers visit Joplin for league battle

Kullen Carlock, as a sophomore, earned second team all-Ozark Conference honors for a young Camdenton High School basketball team in 2011-12.

Carlock, about a 6-foot guard, is averaging more than 20 points this season and it might yield dividends for Joplin if the Eagles pay close attention to him tonight when the Lakers visit for an Ozark Conference game.

Tipoff probably will be about 7:30 in Robert Ellis Young Gymnasium at Missouri Southern State University.

“We’re competing this season,” Laker coach Kenny Ash said Thursday. “We basically have the entire group returning from last season.”

The Lakers — the move from the Tiger mascot was engineered by the late Camdenton/Glendale coach Jack Roberts in the mid-1950s — are 6-8 overall and 0-2 in the Ozark.

Joplin, 7-3 overall, opened its league schedule by winning 79-51 at Lebanon on Tuesday night.

The Lakers have lost to Parkview and Glendale in the league. Their 66-59 loss at Glendale on Tuesday night was in overtime.

Carlock hit five treys in scoring 30 points at Glendale, noted Joplin assistant Jeff Hafer.

Carlock scored 18 points — more than half the Lakers’ points — as Camdenton beat Morrisville 33-22 for consolation honors in the Blue Division of the Greenwood Blue and Gold Tournament.

“Obviously, they have a pretty good squad,” Joplin head coach Jeff Williams said.

Ash, a graduate of Columbia Rock Bridge High School, is in his second season at Camdenton after a pair at Kirksville. His father Ken, who coached at Pittsburg State during his career, is director of the Missouri Show-Me Games.

John Hyde, a 6-2 senior, is expected to join Carlock, juniors Zach Brown and Ryan Elliott and sophomore Jake Decker in tonight’s lineup.

Joplin, Williams said, will counter with 6-1 junior Charlie Brown, 6-3 senior Daniel Stokes, 6-0 junior Keiondre Adams, 6-4 senior Abe Hueller and 6-4 senior Adam St. Peter.

Tucker Wallace, a 6-3 senior, will continue to rotate with Hueller and St. Peter on the inside, Williams said.

Hueller scored 19 points and grabbed 14 rebounds against Lebanon.

Brown is averaging 19.5 points and 4.5 assists and St. Peter is registering 12.5 points. St. Peter and Wallace each are averaging seven rebounds.

“I believe we’ve been improving throughout the season,” Williams said. “Playing teams the caliber of Webster Groves (Kaminsky Classic champion) makes you better.

“We’re making strides,” Williams said. “We’re healthy. We’re excited. We’re ready to play another game.”
