Greathouse inks with LCC softball

SARCOXIE, Mo. —  Destinee Greathouse. a Class 2 all-regional selection the past three seasons for the Sarcoxie High School softball team, signed a letter of intent with Labette Community College on Tuesday.

Cardinal coach Ryan Phillips came from Parsons for the signing of the right-handed pitcher.

But Phillips said that Greathouse probably will be a third baseman for the Cardinals.

“We believe third base is her best position,” Phillips said. “Also, because of her speed, we’ll look at her in the outfield.”

“For us, she’s been a four-year starter in the circle,” Sarcoxie coach Dale Rice said. “I know, though, she also has played third base and the outfield in the summer (for the Worth Prospects).”

Rice said that qualities for Greathouse include “work ethic and coachability.”

“She shows up at practice and has a great attitude,” Rice said. “She loves softball and nothing will distract her.”

Added Phillips: “She’s very intelligent and fits real well in our program. We’ve been an NJCAA Academic All-American Team for four consecutive years. That takes a cumulative GPA of 3.60.”

Phillips, a 1999 graduate of Neosho High School, is in his ninth season with the NJCAA Division II Cardinals. They were 40-18 last spring and nationally were ranked as high as third.

Valedictorian Destinee, the daughter of April and Curtis Greathouse, has her mind made up about emphasis in the classroom.

“It’s pre-med. I want to be a heart surgeon,” the all-Spring River Valley Conference selection said.

“I liked the sizes of the classes at Labette,” she said. “I liked the atmosphere. I liked the people. I liked the community.”
