Carl Junction JV beats McAuley

The Carl Junction junior varsity, thanks to a dominating second half, rallied to beat the host Warriors 53-46 in a boys game of the McAuley Catholic Warrior Classic on Thursday night.

Springfield Catholic nudged College Heights Christian 55-53 in another boys game.

The Carl Junction junior varsity girls hurdled Exeter 45-15 to open the three-game session.

Tonight’s schedule: Miller girls vs. Wheaton, 6 p.m.; Carl Junction girls vs. McAuley, 7:30; Carl Junction boys vs. CHC, 9.

The tourney winds up on Saturday with four games. The first game at 1:30 p.m. decides girls fifth.

Cody Vogt sparked the Carl Junction boys against McAuley with 26 points. Vogt had four of the winner’s nine 3s and Andrew Reed sank three.

Shaw Robertson tallied 17 points for the Warriors and Cole Lowry added 16.

Said McAuley coach Randy  Robertson: “We came out pretty dominant (leading 11-4 after the first period and 25-17 at the half). But right before the half Carl Junction got started on offense. We couldn’t hold them in the third quarter. We didn’t play good basketball in the second half.”

CHC had possession of the ball with about six seconds remaining but needed to go the length of the court to either tie or win with a trey. But a turnover negated the opportunity.

College Heights received 23 points from Josh Woodmansee and 19 from Jake Hamilton. Brayton Ballenger tallied 17 points for Springfield Catholic.

The Carl Junction jayvee girls were led in scoring by Lindsey Showalter (12) and Taylor Beck (10).
