Rob Guerin, who guided the Crane boys to the MSHSAA Class 2 championship in 2010-11, has been hired to coach the Pierce City girls in 2012-13.
The position became vacant with the move of Tiffany Dirks to Carl Junction after a year as the Eagles’ head coach.
Guerin, 33, was head coach at Crane for five seasons after a pair at Exeter.
“It will be a change, for sure, the switching of coaching boys to girls,” Guerin said. “But it’s still basketball.
“I haven’t had a chance to meet with the girls,” Guerin said. “I have talked with them on the phone. We plan to meet on Tuesday.
“I’m excited about the opportunity.” Guerin said. “I’m looking forward to it.”
Guerin, unsure of who’ll be his assistant, said he believed the Eagles, Class 3 in 2011-12, will be assigned to Class 2 by MSHSAA.
Pierce City rolled up a 20-6 overall record in 2011-12 and won the Spring River Valley Conference at 9-0.
Guerin, 6-foot-2, is a graduate of Chadwick High School (1997) and Missouri Valley College of Marshall. He was an all-stater at Chadwick and helped the 1996-97 edition finish third in Class 1 for Terry Jester (now coaching at Galena, Mo.) by beating Golden City 70-56.
His wife, the former Gretta Wise (a standout in athletics at Crane), works for Skaggs Regional Medical Center in Branson. They have two sons — Gage, 6, and Bryer, 4.
Crane, incidentally, did not capture the Southwest Central League title when it won state — the Pirates’ only crown — with a 27-5 record behind Levi Cook.
“We did not,” Guerin said with a laugh. “Billings finished 7-0 to our 6-1.
“But I’d trade that (a league title for a state title) any season.”
Crane finished 20-7, 7-0 in earning SWCL laurels in 2009-10.
