Large-school state track and field competition begins today

— Shane Williams of Mount Vernon is among the favorites in three events at the MSHSAA Class 3 Track and Field Championships on Friday and Saturday at Dwight Reed Stadium in Jefferson City.

Williams, a Northwest Missouri football recruit, is the No. 1 seed in the long jump (22 feet, 6 inches), No. 4 in the triple jump (44-3.25) and No. 5 in the high jump (6-5).

Carl Junction qualified its 4x400 relay team of Nick Kennedy, Matt Magee, Alex McMullen and Nick Thompson. Conner Rohmiller and Chris Whelan qualified in the triple jump.

Nevada’s qualifiers include co-No. 1 seed Morgan Hold and No. 5 seed Steffen Ogle in the pole vault, Dalton Hendren in the 200 and the 4x100 relay team.

Other state qualifiers include Shane Murphy of Seneca and Caleb Littlefield of McDonald County in the 3200, Cody Frana of Cassville in the 110 and 300 hurdles and Pierce Gibson of Mount Vernon in the high jump.

In Class 4, Neosho’s qualifiers are Logan Davidson in the high jump, Justin McKee in the long jump and the 4x100 and 4x200 relay teams.

In the girls’ division, Carl Junction’s Hope Joyner is seeded No. 5 in the shot put and No. 10 in the 100 hurdles. Brittany Rose qualified in the 300 hurdles along with the 4x800 relay team of Jordyn Capra, Emily Keeter, Alex King and Rose.

Other qualifiers include McDonald County’s Courtni Smith in the high jump and triple jump, Emily Sorrell of East Newton in the 1600 and 3200, Annie Howard of Seneca in the 100 hurdles, Erica Tucker of Aurora in the 800, and Nevada and Cassville in the 4x100 relay.
