Grin Action volleyball set for four-team tournament

— The Grin Action Classic high school all-star volleyball tournament is scheduled for 1 p.m. Saturday at Parkview High School.

The tournament will consist of four teams — North, South, East and West, said Republic head coach Piper Wright, who was chosen as head coach of the West team.

She will be assisted by Rhonda Wright of Webb City and Mary Colin of College Heights.

“It’s very rewarding,” Colin said. “The all-star game benefits the Ronald McDonald House, which is great because I have a student with cancer.”

The top two teams in the tournament will play for the championship at 3 p.m.

College Heights will be represented by Kirsty Green, Athen Taylor and Kayte Peters. All three will continue their careers in college — Green at Oklahoma Baptist in Shawnee, Okla., Taylor at Pasco-Hernando Community College in New Port Richey, Fla., and Peters at Mineral Area Community College in Park Hills, Mo., a suburb of St. Louis.

Olivia Hampton of Joplin, who has signed with Southwestern College in Winfield, Kan., was named to the West squad along with former Joplin teammate Erin Lawellin.

Hope Joyner of Carl Junction, who has signed to play volleyball at Pittsburg State, also was chosen to the West squad.

“It’s awesome I get a chance to play with the best, the setters, the liberos,” Joyner said. “It’s going to be a lot of fun.

“I am thankful for the opportunity and couldn’t have done it without the help of (Carl Junction coach) Sarah Wall. She is my No. 1 fan and I wouldn’t trade our memories for anything.”

Emily Goeken and Chloe Shepherd will represent Carthage. Goeken has signed with Northeastern Oklahoma A&M College at Miami, while Shepherd has signed with College of the Ozarks in Point Lookout, Mo.

Rounding out the squad are three players from Springfield Hillcrest — McKenzie Gott, Kayla Fisher and Shelby Newton.
