Yuhas, Locke to lead Joplin golf

Nick Yuhas and Griffen Locke are 1-2 on the Joplin High School golf team this spring.

Eagle coach Jack Pace indicated on Monday that Yuhas and Locke could change positions during the season.

“They will fight for No. 1 all season,” Pace said. “They’re good friends competing for No. 1. They’re leaders, too.

“Hopefully, they’ll take turns winning tournaments,” Pace said with a laugh. “That’s good for Joplin golf.”

The Eagles hope to open the season at 3:30 p.m. on Wednesday at Briarbrook against Webb City and Carthage.

The nine-team Joplin Invitational is scheduled to begin at 8:30 a.m. on Thursday at Twin Hills.

Pace said that Locke, senior who’s signed to play soccer at Neosho County Community College, Chanute, Kan., and junior Yuhas sparkled for the Eagles last season.

“We’re expecting good things,” Pace said. “Hopefully, some of the younger players will kick in.”

Sophomores Austin Garritson and Tamerik Branham are 3-4 in qualifying, Pace said.

Pace said a tie is at No. 5 between senior Andrew Swadley and freshman Chance Sticklen.

Completing the roster are senior Tristan Richards, junior Wes Evans and sophomores Walker Easton, Keaton Hill and Peyton McPheron.

The inclement weather recently has played havoc with the Joplin outside practices, Pace said. That’s resulted in more classroom work such as reviewing rules, Pace said.

Notes: Pace again is assisted by son-in-law Kris Garrett. ... Eagles will be seeking a third straight Ozark Conference championship on April 22 at Rolla. ... Eagles beat Glendale and West Plains by a stroke in 2012 at Springfield Rivercut Golf Course. ... Locke and Yuhas reached MSHSAA Class 4 sectional competition last season but didn’t advance to state (this year’s tourney will be held at Rivercut). .... Nixa won the Class 4 District 6 Tournament at Carthage last season with 314 strokes to 319 for Kickapoo, 328 for Glendale and 329 for Joplin (Yuhas shot 75 and Locke 80). Nixa, a week earlier, claimed the Carthage/Sonic Invitational with an identical 314.
