Prep roundup: Joplin tops Hillcrest on penalty kicks

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. — A solid defensive effort and the goalkeeping of Megan Rowe led to Joplin’s penalty kick shootout win over Hillcrest on Thursday.

The game was tied 1-1 after regulation and two overtimes before the Eagles prevailed 2-1 on penalty kicks.

The Eagles’ Courtney Mullins scored an unassisted goal just eight minutes into the game. While JHS did not find the back of the net again, seven saves from Rowe and a stingy effort from the backfield allowed the Eagles to take the game into the penalty kick shootout.

Hailey Harrison scored on Hillcrest’s first penatly kick, but Rowe stopped the next four shots.

Kimmi Easton knoteed the shootout and Molly Banwart, on the fifth penalty kick, won it for the Eagles.

“Our defense did a really good job and Rowe made some good saves,” Joplin coach Ed Miller said.

“Chelsea Nimmo probably played her best game of the year and created a lot of opportunities for us, and Lauren Stringer played a great game at fullback.”

Joplin (7-8, 2-2 Ozark Conference) is at Carl Junction on Monday.
