Joplin's Blake Brown signs with Bacone

FLASH: The Joplin Miners’ Blake Brown has changed his name.

He’s decided to go with “Mr. Versatility.”

Just kidding, but such a moniker would fit Brown.

Said Miners’ coach Drew Schulte: “Blake has the highest batting average on our (American Legion) team. He’s been our top reliever. He does well at whatever position he plays.”

Said Joplin High School coach Kirk Harryman: “He did a good job for us in the spring. He’s had a great summer with the Miners. He’s steady at everything he does.”

Brown said he’d played every position except catcher — even designated hitter — for the Miners this summer.

A signing ceremony for Brown was held on Wednesday at the JHS 11-12 Campus.

Brown said he’d visited and signed on Tuesday with Bacone College of Muskogee, Okla.

Brown said Bacone coach J.T. Severe indicated the 180-pound right-hander would get the opportunity to pitch and play the outfield for the Warriors.

“I just want to play,” Brown said. “The position doesn’t matter.”

Harryman said Brown appeared in 12 games — just missing half of the Eagles’ 25 outings —  and had two saves as a senior.

“He was hard on right-handed batters,” Harryman said. “He has nice movement on his fastball. He needs to continue working on becoming more consistent with his off-speed pitches.”

Blake, the son of Kathy and Joe Brown, said he plans to major in sports management.

“I want to become a general manager of a professional team or become a players’ agent,” Brown said.

NAIA Bacone finished 35-16 overall and 20-6 in the Red River Athletic Conference last spring.

Harryman said Brown is the third 2013 Joplin senior to sign for baseball. He joins Brett Graham (Missouri Southern) and Caleb Garton (Wentworth Military Academy and College).
