Derek Binford takes job at Morrisville

Derek Binford, girls basketball coach at Greenfield High School the past three seasons, has resigned to take a similar position at Morrisville.

Binford also was the Wildcats’ athletics director during the 2012-13 season.

Binford said Aaron O’Laughlin, the Greenfield head football coach, has been named his replacement. O’Laughlin has experience coaching basketball at Westran High School in Huntsville, Binford said.

Binford replaces a fixture in basketball at Morrisville — David Francka — who coached the boys for several years before the girls stint.

Binford also will coach girls junior high basketball in the fall and teach business.

“I like the future at Morrisville (18-9 overall in 2012-13),” Binford said. “They have strong sophomore and junior classes. We expect the seniors — maybe we’ll have just two — will be the leaders and play a lot.”

Greenfield finished 13-14 overall and 4-5 in the Spring River Valley Conference last season.

Greenfield and Morrisville are Class 2, Binford said. Morrisville lost to Marionville in the District 11 semifinals before the Comets lost to eventual state champion Crane. Greenfield, meanwhile, lost to No. 1 seed Pierce City in a semifinal in District 12 at Spokane.

Binford, 29, was a standout point guard at Puxico High School (2002) in southeast Missouri. He attended both Meramec and Three Rivers a semester before finishing his bachelor’s degree in business at Missouri State. He’s nearing a master’s in education from MSU.
