Joplin's Miriah Johnson leads area's quick start at state

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. — Miriah Johnson of Joplin won a medal in the high jump Friday at the Class 4 Missouri Track and Field Championships at Dwight T. Reed Stadium.

Johnson, a senior who has agreed to join Missouri Southern’s track and field program this fall, tied for seventh with a leap of 5 feet, 3 inches.

“No misses. Everything was on the first attempt,” said Joplin head coach Kasey Pliler. “We’ve been working on her run, trying to get it smoothed out. Both Ryun (Snyder) and her runs were immaculate today.”

Snyder, a senior, was 12th in the boys’ high jump at 6 feet.

Webb City’s Jarvis Jones advanced to today’s finals in the 100 and 200 meters. Jones had the second-fastest time in the 100 prelims with a time of 10.79 seconds, just behind Jehu Chesson II of Ladue, who ran in 10.77.

“They were in different heats,” said Webb City head coach Mike Smith. “Jarvis broke the school record again and looked good doing it. He won his heat and the other guy won his heat. How much did they let up? I don’t know.

“It’ll be fun to watch them go head-to-head,” he said. “It’ll be a hair-raising experience.”

In the 200, Jones was seventh in 21.95 seconds. District rival Quintin Smith of Parkview won the prelims in 21.53. Alex Christian of Webb City placed sixth in the long jump with a leap of 21 feet, 7.75 inches.

Webb City’s 4x100 and 4x200 relay teams did not qualify for the finals. The 4x200 team was disqualified for an improper exchange, and Phoenix Johnson pulled a hamstring in the 4x100, Smith said.

Stefan Stokes of Carthage advanced in the 110 hurdles with a time of 14.87 seconds, good for seventh place.

In Class 3 girls, Carl Junction’s 4x400 relay team broke the school record and qualified for the finals with a seventh-place finish in 4 minutes, 7.85 seconds. Members are Emily Keeter, Sydney Koch, Alex King and Brittney Rose.

“It just seemed to start snowballing for them and Brittney brought them home,” said head coach Mark Robertson. “Everybody ran their best and it showed with a school record.

“I wouldn’t be surprised if they break the school record again,” he said. “I know the girls gave everything they had and I know they will again.”

McDonald County’s Courtni Smith placed seventh in the long jump with a distance of 16-3.

In Class 3 boys, Shane Williams of Mount Vernon placed fifth in the triple jump with a leap of 44-5.25. Cody Frana of Cassville qualified for the finals in the 110 and 300 hurdles.

Naron Rollins of Platte County tied state records in winning the 100 in 10.66 seconds and the 200 in 21.32.
