Phil McClintock, former Neosho High School basketball standout, has landed his first position as a head coach at the prep level.
McClintock, a graduate assistant the past two seasons in men’s basketball under Nick Totta at William Woods University of Fulton, Mo., has been named head boys coach at Salem (Mo.). The Class 4 Tigers belong to the South Central Association.
McClintock, who turns 26 on Aug. 8, graduated from Neosho in 2005 and attended Ottawa (Kan.) University.
He left the NAIA Division II Braves with their record for blocked shots. The 6-foot-5, two-time All-American also left ranked in the top five in career points, rebounds and steals.
McClintock said he gained valuable and considerable experience — in football as well as basketball — while student teaching at Central Heights in Kansas before moving to William Woods to secure his master’s degree in athletic administration.
“I was looking to go to the high school level,” McClintock said. “Chris Newland, a graduate assistant in women’s basketball (at William Woods), told me about the vacancy. He’d heard about it because a friend of his (Steve Carvajal) was moving (from LaPlata) to Salem to become the new superintendent.”
McClintock, who’s single, said he plans to move to Salem — some two hours from Fulton — next week and that’s when the Tigers’ team camp will start. He’s been able to meet briefly with the players.
“I believe we’ll have three returning starters and a senior was a second-team all-conference selection,” McClintock said.
“Class 4 definitely is a great place to start,” McClintock said. “Plus, I like to fish and float (Current River is near). I’m looking forward to it.”
Phil’s parents, Yvonne McClintock and Mark and Rose McClintock, live in Neosho.
