Prep roundup: Lamar dominates in district track

LAMAR, Mo. — Lamar won half of the 18 events, and the Tigers ran away with the boys team championship Saturday in the Class 2 District 5 track meet.

The Tigers accumulated 180 points, and Stockton trimmed Hollister 73.5-66 for runner-up honors.

Nick Jeffries doubled in the 110 high and 300 intermediate hurdles for Lamar, and the Tigers swept all four relay events. Other first-place winners were Sam Bailey in the discus, Austin Boice in the shot put and Nolan Jeffries in the 400.

Ryan Beaver of College Heights picked up victories in the 1,600 and 3,200 meters. The Cougars finished eighth in the team standings with 39 points.

Christian Sellars of Southwest prevailed in the 800.

Pierce City earned the girls team title with 132 points, followed by Stockton with 99 and Hollister with 70.5.

The Eagles won five events — Makina Kelley in the pole vault, Sara Stearns in the discus, Krishna Merriman in the 400 and the 4x200 and 4x100 relay teams.

College Heights’ Savannah Beaver won the 800 and 1,600 as the Cougars finished ninth in the team standings with 33 points.

The top four finishers in each event qualify for next Saturday’s sectional meet at Fair Grove.

Class 1 District 3

CLEVELAND, Mo. — Victoria Foley of McAuley Catholic won the discus and shot put in Saturday’s Class 1 District 3 meet hosted by Cass-Midway High School.

Chris Saladin of Thomas Jefferson also qualified for next Saturday’s sectional meet at Willard by placing third in the 3,200 meters.

Cass-Midway swept the team titles, followed by Lockwood and LIberal in the girls division and Drexel and Greenfield in the boys division.

First-place finishers in the boys meet included Mike Spicer of Jasper in the triple jump, Britton Black of Greenfield in the 100, Chris King of Liberal in the 800,k Brendan Black of Greenfield in the 200 and Greenfield in the 4x100 and 4x200 relays.

Other girls winners included Julie Greer of Jasper in the 100 hurdles, Liberal’s Kacey Ayers in the 300 hurdles and 200, Kori Dodson in the 100, Lockwood’s Madison Coose in the high jump, Quinn Loveall in the long jump and Chloe Sowell in the 400 and Liberal’s 4x200 and 4x100 relays.

Joplin loses pair


COLUMBIA, Mo. — The Eagles lost twice — 7-4 to Kirkwood and 11-0 to Class 1 power Clayton — in the North Central Missouri Invitational at Bethel Park.

The format had six singles matches and five doubles.

Winning for Joplin against Kirkwood were Jeremy Lynn and Edran Ali in singles and Lynn-Andrew Roberts and Ali-Luke Frogge in doubles.

Lynn (20-1) lost 8-4 to Clayton’s Mac Rechan at No. 1 singles.

Joplin coach Sean McWilliams said the Eagles are seeded first among five teams in the team Class 2 District 12 Tournament. Joplin will entertain at  4 p.m. Tuesday the winner of Monday’s match between fourth-seeded Carthage and Neosho.

Third-seeded Webb City is at second-seeded Springfield Central in another Tuesday match.
