CARL JUNCTION, Mo. — Jaylin Dinkins and Kyler Ng conducted their own 3-point contest Friday night.

Ng, a 6-foot senior guard for Seneca, drilled five 3-pointers, four in the first half.

Dinkins, a 6-foot senior for Blue Springs, answered Ng with four 3-pointers during regulation, including three during a crucial stretch in the third quarter.

It took overtime to decide the long-range champion as Dinkins’ 21-foot jumper just before the buzzer lifted the Wildcats to a 71-68 victory over Seneca in the second game of the Mercy Sports Medicine CJ Classic at the Carl Junction High School Gymnasium.

In Friday’s first game, 3-pointers continued to be the tournament storyline as Carthage and Carl Junction combined to hit 16 treys. Nathan Reid’s effort in the final four minutes lifted the Tigers to a 60-57 victory over the Bulldogs.

The tournament concludes today with Seneca and Carthage tipping off at noon followed by Carl Junction and Blue Springs at 1:30 p.m.

Blue Springs 71-68, OT

In overtime, both Seneca (11-5) and Blue Springs (9-5) scored on a pair of free throws to remain tied at 68.

Blue Springs took possession with 1:10 remaining after an offensive foul. The Wildcats worked the clock down to 18 seconds when Adam Jones called a timeout to set up the final play.

“We had been running the set most of the game, trying to get our guys to make good decisions either feed the post or find our shooters,” Jones said. “Last night, our guy with the hot hand was Jay Corwin, tonight it was Jaylin Dinkins.

“Our point guard (Walter Sorrells) showed so much maturity tonight to find the right guy at the right time and he drained it. We drew that play up for him, we wanted to him to have the ball in his hands and I knew it was good as soon as he released it.”

After the ball was inbounded with 18 seconds left, Sorrells dribble penetrated along the left side of the paint before he kicked out to Dinkins, who was open in the deep right elbow.

“Coming out of the time out, I knew I was going to get the ball and I had been feeling it,” Dinkins said. “I wanted to take that shot. I was surprised the defense collapsed as far as they did on Walter because it felt like I was wide open. It felt good when I released it, but it was a 50-50 shot because I was falling backwards when I shot it.

“It was an amazing feeling; all the guys running at me afterwards. That was a first for me, I’ve never hit a game-winner at the buzzer before.”

Dinkins, Sorrells, a 5-foot-10 junior, and Corwin, a 6-5 senior all scored 15 points for the Wildcats.

The overtime lost overshadowed a big shooting night for the Indians. A year ago Friday night in the CJ Classic, Seneca set a school record with 13 3-pointers in a loss. Against Blue Springs, Ng, Seth Harris and Bradley Jumper combined for a season-best 12 3-pointers.

Ng finished with a game-high 26 points, 20 in the first half, before fouling out in overtime. Harris, a 5-8 junior guard, had 20 points including six 3-pointers. Logan St. Clair and Elias Roelfsema added eight each for the Indians.

Carthage 60-57

With less than four minutes left in the game, the score tied at 51 and Carl Junction on a 10-3 run to knot the game, who did Carthage (6-11) turn to make plays down the stretch?

None other than senior forward Nathan Reid.

Reid scored five straight points, blocked three shots and came up with a steal in the final four minutes to push the Tigers past the Bulldogs.

“I just felt like that was time we needed to step up and put the game away,” said Reid, who scored 17 of his game-high 24 in the second half. “We had been playing down for so long, coming out of a timeout, I felt like we all got real focused and made it a point to get it done on the defensive end.”

All three of his blocks came on the perimeter as he used his 6-foot-5 frame to swat 3-point field goals. When Carl Junction tried to feed the ball inside, Reid stepped in front of the pass for a steal and on offense, he converted a three-point play and added another basket on the block as did 6-5 sophomore Jaryd Coss to extend the Tigers’ lead to 58-52.

Coss finished with 10 points, 6-foot junior guard Anthony Turk scored 10 off the bench all in the second half.

Carl Junction (6-7) which overcame a seven-point deficit in the fourth quarter to tie the game, got 23 points from 6-1 junior guard Dustin Satterlee, who connected on seven 3-pointers, five in the second half.

Junior guard Matt Magee had 12 points and was one of four players with 3-pointers in the game for the Bulldogs, who had 11 treys total.
