JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. —
Don Hollingshead of Joplin placed third at 152 pounds in the MSHSAA Class 4, District 3 tournament Saturday at Jefferson City and qualified for the state tournament this week at Columbia.
Hollingshead was pinned in the third period of his semifinal match against Jackie Tuck of Northwest (Cedar Hill), then defeated David Hawk of Waynesville 10-5 in the third-place match.
“Don wrestled (Hawk) last week and lost, so that shows how much composure he can have,” said Joplin head coach David Myers. “What separates Don from anyone in the state right now is not much.”
Three other Joplin wrestlers came within one match of qualifying for the state tournament. Caden Carlin at 106, Christian Plassman at 182 and Phillip Reitz at 285 all advanced to the consolation semifinals.
“Caden kind of came on strong. He’s a pretty good freshmen with a lot of technique, a lot of stuff to work with,” Myers said. “Same thing with Christian. He caught on at the end of the year, too, as Landon Taylor’s replacement.
“I’m extremely pleased with Phillip Reitz. Those guys one through four in the district are going to be one through four at state next week, too,” Myers said. “He wrestled a tough match with that Nixa kid (Xyah Ra in the consolation semifinals), who was 45-3 going into the tournament.”
