Prep roundup: Riverton earns CNC title

RIVERTON, Kan. — The Riverton Rams captured their first CNC League basketball championship since 1997 by beating the St. Mary’s-Colgan Panthers 51-36 on Tuesday night at Riverton High School. That win coupled with Frontenac’s loss to Girard gave Riverton sole ownership of the league crown.

Sophomore Landon North led the Rams with 24 points.

But Riverton coach Zach Martin said it was defense that sparked Rams. Colgan’s leading scorer Dyson Dechant was limited to 13 points, with most of his points coming off free throws. Riverton held the Panthers to 10 points over the second and third quarters combined.

“Our defense is what won the game for us, without a doubt,” Martin said. “Dyson Dechant is a great scorer and we held him to three field goals. Jacob Qualls and Dylan Weaver did a great job on him.”

Dechant was Colgan’s only scorer in double figures.

The Rams (15-5, 6-1 CNC) finished the regular season with the league title, but now will turn their attention toward a Class 3A sub-state at Colgan.

“It means a great deal to our kids to win the league,” Martin said. “We can enjoy this for a day, but one of our other goals is sub-state. So we can’t enjoy this too long.”

Colgan (14-5, 5-2 CNC) will face Labette County on the road Thursday to finish the regular season.

Webb City boys 64, Neosho 32

NEOSHO, Mo. — The Cardinals wound up 3-4 in the Central Ozark Conference Large Division by beating the Wildcats.

Webb City (17-8 overall) received 16 points from Kohl Slaughter, 15 from Phoenix Johnson and 10 from Nate Brown.

Neosho, which trailed 39-19 at the half, was led in scoring by Caden Hendricks and Lukas Werneke with eight points apiece.

It was the regular-season final for Neosho. Webb City entertains Parsons on Friday night.

Warriors, Cougars fall

PURDY, Mo. — Top-seeded Purdy defeated College Heights Christian School 82-45 and third-seeded Greenfield downed McAuley Catholic 74-58 in Class 2 District 12 boys games.

Tyler Scott’s 15 points paced five Purdy players in double figures. Alex Mareth and Brent Cornman scored 13 and 12, respectively, and Cameron Terry and Keevin Walker each had 10 for the Eagles.

Josh Woodmansee captured game honors with 20 points for the Cougars.

Austin Marshall poured in 31 points for Greenfield, which outscored McAuley 26-17 in the second quarter to claim a 42-38 halftime lead. Hunter Montez added 11 for the Wildcats.

McAuley received 19 points from Shaw Robertson and 16 from Adam Robertson.

McAuley, CHC girls ousted

PURDY, Mo. — Purdy eliminated the Warriors 55-23 and Jasper hurdled College Heights 59-19 in Class 2 District 12 Tournament openers on Monday night.

Katie Hughes sparked Purdy (14-13) with 24 points and 13 rebounds. Billie House added 11 points and Courtney White had six assists.

Kambry Wagner tallied nine points to pace the Warriors.

Adi Etcheson scored 16 points for Jasper. Kirsty Green netted 16 for the Cavaliers.
