Offense dominates jamboree at Junge Field

The defenses took a back seat to the offenses on Friday night in a prep football jamboree hosted by Joplin at Junge Field.

Class 3 Seneca and Class 4 Webb City joined the Class 6 Eagles before an enthusiastic turnout in gorgeous weather.

Defending Class 4 champion Webb City finished with a flourish by striking swiftly for four touchdowns against Joplin in the “main event” that closed out the abbreviated games.

The teams play for real at 7 p.m. next Friday with Joplin entertaining Springfield Glendale in the Ozark Conference, Webb City visiting Carl Junction and Carthage traveling to Seneca.

Said Joplin coach Chris Shields: “Our defense wasn’t very good. The bottom line is, from my perspective, we didn’t play very well on defense. We have to tackle better and play more physical.

“Offensively, although we had a few mistakes, we played well when we executed,” Shields said.

Examples against Seneca: Gabe Sachetta’s scoring pass in the corner of the end zone to Gavin Jones, the running of Chris Payton-Barba and Tristan Ash’s scoring pass to David Hoosier.

The Joplin offense also had two touchdowns against the Cardinals and had another erased by a penalty.

Said Webb City coach John Roderique: “We saw some good things. We also saw some things that we’ll have to go back and correct.

“I think, overall, we’re happy,” Roderique said. “We had a few penalties and missed assignments.

“We’re trying to become more multiple on offense this season,” Roderique said. “I thought our ‘pistol formation’ had moments of looking decent.”

The running of Phoenix Johnson, Cooper Smith, Trey Parra, Tyler Davison and Kyle Baldasarre and John Roderique’s passes to Jalen Vaden and Kohl Slaughter highlighted the Cardinals’ effort against the Eagles/Indians.

Coach Roderique also used Nate Brown, like Roderique’s son a senior, and junior Mason Williams at quarterback.

Webb City also had four touchdowns against Seneca.

Said Seneca coach Dan Scheible: “I think overall we did OK. We played very hard — a staple of Seneca football. There were a few little things we have to improve.

“We were a little tentative,” Scheible said. “We didn’t play as fast as we’ll need to play on offense. Defensively, we had some alignment issues.

“We’re considering this Week 1,” Scheible said. “You make your most progress from Week 1 to Week 2.

“We — the coaches — will evaluate the video tonight and look at it again in the morning,” Scheible said. “Players report at 9:30 a.m.”
