Webb City's Gannaway signs with Coe College

Webb City High School senior Gabbie Gannaway has signed an agreement to continue her basketball career with NCAA Division III Coe College of Cedar Rapids, Iowa.

The 5-foot-4 Gannaway, who earned three letters, started her senior season for the Cardinals.

The point guard helped the Cardinals finish 15-13 overall as a senior. She posted averages of some 12 points,  3 assists, 2 steals and 4 rebounds.

Said Webb City coach Brad Shorter: “Gabbie achieved those averages despite slowed by a knee injury (and missing several games). She obviously wasn’t the same player (with the injury) and we weren’t the same team.

“She’s 100 percent (physically),” Shorter said. “She works in our off-season conditioning program.

“I’m confident that Gabbie, who hit 41 percent of her 3s, has the ability to play at Coe,” Shorter said.

Coe, whose head coach is Randi Peterson, is coming off an outstanding season. The Kohawks were 21-8 overall, 12-4 in the Iowa Intercollegiate Athletic Conference and reached postseason. They beat Wisconsin-River Falls 72-61 before losing 51-45 to St. Thomas in regional competition.

“It will be a challenge,” Gannaway said of playing for Coe. “They should return several players (for 2012-13) from this season. I have to keep playing, practicing and improving. My speed — my whole game — has to improve.

“I loved everything about it,” Gannaway said of the visit to Cedar Rapids. “The coaches — assistant Jamie Rainey as well as Peterson — were amazing. The players were welcoming.”

The 21 wins under Peterson, University of Iowa graduate who’ll be in her seventh season with the Kohawks, is second most at Coe.

Gabbie, who plans to study physical therapy, is the daughter of Shelly and Bill Gannaway.
