Carl Junction claims first girls soccer tournament title

WILLARD, Mo. — Take a bow, Carl Junction girls.

The Carl Junction High School soccer team  posted a first in its four-year history on Saturday.

It won the Willard Tournament — the Bulldogs’ first championship — by defeating the host Tigers 1-0.

Carl Junction, 13-6 overall under Kevin Hauck and Stephanie Taylor, beat Springfield Greenwood 5-2 in the semifinals after opening Friday with a 3-0 win against Bolivar.

Carl Junction scored 20 minutes into the match against Willard and the defense protected the lead.

Kelsey Swarens had the goal, assisted by Shelby Campbell, and Sarah Spangler had seven saves in the first half and Alyssa Brown three in the second for the shutout. Carl Junction statistics had it with an 8-7 advantage in shots.

The Bulldogs trailed Greenwood 1-0 at the half before moving ahead 4-1 on goals from Sydney Solberg (43:00), Taylor Beck (assisted by Solberg at 58:00), Solberg (59:00) and Anissa Williams (assisted by Beck at 62:00).

Greenwood cut into the deficit at 64:00 before Beck, assisted by Solberg, closed out the scoring with 10 minutes left in the match.

Carl Junction statistics had the Bulldogs ahead 13-5 in shots. Spangler and Brown had 5 and 2 saves, respectively.

Carl Junction entertains Springfield Central at 4:30 p.m. on Tuesday in a junior varsity-varsity doubleheader.

Baseball

College Heights 5, Jasper 1

JASPER, Mo. — Josh Woodmansee, a freshman, starred on the mound and on offense for the Cougars.

The right-hander allowed three hits, struck out three and walked four as the Cougars improved to 4-11 overall and 2-5 in the Spring River Valley Conference.

Woodmansee, who entered the contest hitting .400, had two doubles in a 4-for-4 performance. He scored two runs, drove in a run and had six stolen bases.

CHC coach Phillip Jordan said sophomore center fielder Cody Shirk made two nice defensive plays to assist Woodmansee.

Jasper hurler Grady Hodge, a sophomore right-hander, struck out 14.
