Carl Junction girls, Lamar boys win Big 8 Conference track crowns

MONETT, Mo. — Carl Junction edged Cassville for the girls team title in the Big 8 Conference track and field championships on Tuesday night.

The Bulldogs, led by high-point scorer Brittany Rose, had 128 points to 110 for Cassville. Lamar was third with 89 points. Carl Junction had already clinched the title before winning the 4x400-meter relay, the meet’s final event.

There was even less drama in the boys team race, which Lamar dominated. The Tigers won nine events and scored 175 points, while Carl Junction edged Monett 98-95 for second place.

In the girls division, Rose won the 300 hurdles (49.0 seconds) and the 400 dash (1:01.5) and placed third in the 100 hurdles, an event won by teammate Hope Joyner.

Lamar swept the relays in boys competition. The Tigers had an individual double winner in Nick Jeffries (110 high and 300 intermediate hurdles).

Shane Williams won the high-point award with 36 of Mount Vernon’s 42 points. Williams won the triple jump (43-4 1/2), long jump (23-0 1/2) and high jump (6-2) and places third in the 200 meters (23.2).

Monett’s Chris Renteria was a second triple winner, taking the 800, 1600 and 3200 races.

Carl Junction’s Christian Repsher cleared 13-7 to win the pole vault.

Mark Robertson of Carl Junction was named the girls coach of the year and Rodney Baldridge of Lamar won boys coaching honors.

Bulldogs win tourney

CARL JUNCTION, Mo. — Carl Junction pounded out 16 hits and whipped Mount Vernon 11-1 in the weather-delayed championship game of the Carthage-hosted Bill O’Dell Tournament.

Catcher Kurtlin Hulette had four hits, including the one which ended the game in the sixth inning by the 10-run rule. Jaron Hulette had a pair of hits and four runs batted in for the Bulldogs.

Webb City 7, Nixa 4

NIXA, Mo. — Breckin Williams, Klay James and Seth Watkins drove in two runs apiece for the Cardinals in the rescheduled game.

Webb City (12-6, 4-3 COC Large Division) tallied four runs in the second inning to open a 6-1 advantage. Williams singled home the first run, and James followed with a two-run double. Watkins then singled to drive in James.

Williams stroked three hits to lead an 11-hit attack and was the winning pitcher. Watkins and James contributed two hits apiece for Webb City, which plays at Seneca, at 4:30 p.m. today.
